Description

Standard single pocket jacket with a 4 color Sleeve Beach Boys'' Party! was the tenth studio album by the Beach Boys and was mostly cover songs. When originally recorded, the band invited friends and family into the studio for a party. Those sounds were then layered over the recorded music for a true party sound. Uncovered and unplugged now strips away those party sounds so that the true sessions can be heard in their entirety.

In the late Fall of 1965, The Beach Boys were at the top of their game. They had released 2 Top 5 Studio LP''s with The Beach Boys Today!, and Summer Days(And Summer Nights!). They had also released 2 of their most popular 45''s with "Help Me Rhonda", and "California Girls". But still, Capitol Records wanted another LP to put out for the upcoming Holiday season. But Brian Wilson, who was no longer touring with the group, in order to focus on writing, arranging, and producing, was working on his masterpiece, the legendary Pet Sounds. So, the group decided on simply putting out a party-vibe LP, where they would sing some of their favorite tunes, both by themselves, as well as by other artists of the era, such as The Beatles and Bob Dylan. They would simply invite some friends over and simply mix some vocal sessions with party snippets to give the vibe of a fun-time party sing-a-long. This double cd set takes out the overdubbed live effects and adds songs and dialog tracks from the sessions. To their surprise, they ended up with another hit LP, which reached #6 on Billboard Charts, as well as a #2 smash 45 with "Barbara Ann", which featured co-lead vocals by Brian and Dean Torrance of Jan & Dean. Capitol Records was now pleased because they had a new LP to put out in time for the Holiday season, and Brian could go back to work on Pet Sounds, which would be released in 1966. The LP was released on November 8, 1965, and The Beach Boys and Capitol Records earned yet another Gold Record. This edition consists of 2 discs. Disc 1 contains 38 tracks with a duration of over 75 minutes, while disc 2 contains 43 tracks with a duration of 72 minutes. I would like to single out the 4 takes by Brian, which he does on the hit made popular by Dion, which was "Ruby Baby". I found it to be one excellent track that should have been included in the original LP. Overall, the cd''s have a very cool playful, at times silly vibe, joking about smoking pot, various girls, etc. The sessions include acoustic guitars, bass, bongos, some of which are played by Hal Blaine of The Wrecking Crew, harmonica, and tambourine by Terry Melcher. I find myself singing along with the tunes. The package comes with a very well annotated 24 page booklet with notes by Alan Boyd, Craig Slowinski, and Mark Linnet. It is a fun-filled double cd aimed at fans of The Beach Boys. Others might not appreciate their antics as much. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! SMRZ!

This is a gold mine, and I am so glad someone finally unearthed it all and put the stuff together properly. Even without the extras, the first disc is absolutely amazing. You get to hear exactly what you wanted to hear. The boys joking around, casually, but still with that spirit and polished edge only a top band in the world could muster.

It really brings home the impression of this group being supremely talented. As they weave between Dylan and The Beatles to whatever suits their fancy, the songs all hold a light that is far brighter than the current age we live in. This unplugged collection is one of the best double albums I have heard, and easily my release of the year when it came out. Some of the material is obviously repeated, but it''s all worth a listen, and the original album is completely marvelous in itself. Plenty of extra takes and songs not on the original running order.

I can''t recommend this enough. Sound quality is absolutely amazing. Dynamic range is great. Easy blind buy.

The original BEACH BOYS PARTY! album was recorded in the late summer and early fall of 1965 to meet Capitol Records'' demand for a new album for the Christmas holiday season. The band had already issued a live album and a Christmas LP the previous year, and had no new studio material ready (Brian Wilson had just begun work on what would become Pet Sounds ), so the band decided to have a series of informal "unplugged" sessions at Western Studios, singing some of their favorite songs of the period. The LP was released as Capitol (D)MAS-2398 on November 8, 1965. It has appeared on CD several times, initially in 1990 as a "two-fer" with the 1968 instrumental album STACK O''TRACKS, then as an individual CD in 1994, when the "two-fers" were mysteriously discontinued. In 1997, the "two-fers" resurfaced as EMI Music Canada imports, and were finally remastered and reissued in 2001 . The most recent reissue of PARTY! was in 2012, when Capitol issued the first-ever stereo mix of the album, alongside the original mono mix .

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the album''s original release, Beach Boys producers Alan Boyd and Mark Linett have assembled this 2-CD set of all of the outtakes from the sessions, starting with a true stereo mix of the original album, but without the "party" overdubs. All of the existing sessions follow, including alternate takes, and other covers such as The Beatles'' "Ticket To Ride," the Jerry Leiber-Mike Stoller composition "Riot In Cell Block #9," The Rolling Stones'' "(I Can''t Get No) Satisfaction," and some of The Beach Boys'' own numbers. The dialogue between the takes reveals that The Boys were really enjoying themselves.

This is a "must-have" for Beach Boys'' fans. Even if you already own one of the previous versions of BEACH BOYS'' PARTY!, this is a worthy addition to your collection. I''m sure you''ll enjoy it as much as I did. Five stars. Thanks to Capitol/UMe for putting this out.

If your a Beach Boys fan you will love this album. It is basically an album that lets you hear the recording process. I love the cover songs and it is really interesting to hear Dennis playing riffs on the harmonica. If your looking for a greatest hits then I probably wouldn''t get this but if you are an avid fan this is a must for your collection. I give it an excellent rating. Pet Sounds was right around the corner so as mentioned by many this album was completed to fill contractual obligations. Party time. Coke and chips? Brian was already into reefer by this time.

This CD is a lot of fun to listen to. The songs are from every group but only sung by Beach Boys. The words are not perfect and the notes are not always right (by original standards) but it is a very funny CD.

HEADS-UP TO NEW BEACH BOYS FANS: You must understand what this album is...and what it is not.

In late 1965 the Beach Boys, at the peak of their fame, had a contractual obligation to Capitol Records to release another album within 1965, but 1) they had no new material ready (they''d already released 2 hugely successful LP''s earlier in the year), and 2) Brian Wilson had mentally moved on from the past ''formula'' Beach Boys music to begin conceptualizing his landmark ''Pet Sounds'' album.

But a contract is a contract. They had to give Capitol SOMETHING.

Brian had the idea to get the group together for a casual, sit-around-the-living-room-with-friends and informally sing favorite hits of the era and some from their growing up years...and make it sound like a party. So, essentially they just turned on the tape recorder and let ''er rip! Later, they overdubbed the sound of their wives & girlfriends ''partying'' as if they were there originally.

The "Party" album was a huge hit and resulted in the wildly popular single, ''Barbara Ann''. That was then.

THIS 2-CD set gives us essentially everything they recorded (much more than what was on the original album) and all in STEREO.

This thing is so damn fun...as long as you understand that it a casual, goofball session made by some pretty talented young men.

The original ''Beach Boys Party!'' album was pretty mediocre, even for the committed fan, and it''s origin as a filler album, merely to fulfil the terms of a recording contract, was easy to see.. This expanded version is much more interesting due the inclusion of the ''vanilla'' recordings i.e. without the added party sound effects - one can hear so much more of what was actually going on in the recording studio! Furthermore, it was these 1965 sessions which produced the unexpected hit ''Barbara Ann'', a cover of a song first recorded and released by the The Regents in March 1961. The Beach Boys hit version features vocals from Dean Torrence, one half of the Jan & Dean duo, who were also pioneers of the early California surf music of the 1960s. Whilst nowhere near as comprehensive (nor could it be ...) or sonically dense as the the Beach Boys ''Pet Sounds'' and ''Smile'' box sets, this album set does run in a fairly similar vein. Nothing here is necessarily going to light up the recording world, but it is certainly a musically interesting and historical Beach Boys artefact which I am more than happy to welcome.

Let me start out by saying that I hate, really hate the Party! album. The word ''throwaway'' doesn''t even come short to describe what I well, and I never thought I''d say this, used to think about this album. On it''s own and taken in the era it was originally released, it forced Brian Wilson to take a step back at a time when he was recreating what was possible in music, not just pop music, but music - full stop. I can count the number of times I''ve listened to it on one hand and whenever ''Barbara Ann'' comes on the radio or cd, I skip it. Then this is released. I still hate the original, but this release has somewhat changed my thinking. Listening to the sheer hard work that went into making it, deserves that rethink on it''s own, but there is music and singing to treasure here and I shall revisit this release far, far more often than the original. So far as adding to the Brian Wilson/Beach Boys archive, this is a worthy release - shame Capitol couldn''t have been this supportive when Brian Wilson was at his peak. More fool them.
