There is a whole chapter dedicated to removing toxins from your environment: home, baby things, pet, yard, etc..
She even goes so far as to list what each chemical does to you.
Scary but effective. And she listed great and simple alternatives like homemade cleaners.
I like when a problem is presented in a solution oriented way!
Near the end there are two chapters I actually ripped out and stapled to keep on my desk as quick guides.
One is food lists and the other is menu ideas and recipes.

I fought obesity since my childhood and after my second pregnancy my compulsive eating went wild. Fortunately enough, that scared me big time and sought help relatively fast (relatively considering that I had been fat for 33 years till that moment). I started a plan that follows pretty much the same principles described in this book. I had always whined about how it is so expensive to eat healthy, but, unless you are living in poverty -unlikely if you are reading this- it is not so! Foods such as snacks, soft drinks, refined grains, sugar and "fat free" substitutes might be cheaper by the unit and make us feel we are doing something about our weight, but if you are like I was, your clothes size and mirror will tell you otherwise, not to mention your bank account, since these foods are DESIGNED to make you keep eating, so they might be cheaper by the unit, but overall, you might end up spending more because of how much you eat, and because of "indirect" costs, our health being the most significant and painful of them. What and how much we eat, obesity research says, not only affects our weight but our MOOD and eventually every aspect of our lives, even if we manage to stay within a healthy BMI range. This is not something I have just read, but something I have seen in myself. Less than a week after letting go of refined sugars and ANYTHING made from white flour I felt a huge weight had been lifted off my chest, my mind was sharper, my mood more stable and my cravings gone. I do pig out now and then and I still struggle with emotional eating but I have been within a healthy weight range for 18 months now, and at 35 I look and feel my absolute best. So yes, I think this book has a HUGE point and although I considered myself pretty educated given my history, it provided lots of new insights. I loved Jillian''s 30-day shred, for only 5 bucks on Amazon Instant Video, it is great to have an intense workout in less than 30 minutes, which makes me get it over with before my couch potato side takes over! Also, another wonderful book I read by recommendation of the doctor I lost weight with is "The End of Overeating", by David Kessler. Not for practical advice though, but to be more aware of the science behind that "can''t stop till I am done with the whole package", which is REAL and does NOT have to do with poor willpower, but with how our bodies react to those kinds of substances we eat but we cannot really call food. Last but not least: this might sound pretty duh! but it is one of those things we can rationally understand and still be unable to act on it. What matters is what we DO, so, with the right information, ACTION is what will make the difference. I have been a master in the art of planning, crafting checklists, stocking up with books, DVDs and the like, without losing a single pound. It was only when I was more scared by my overeating than bothered by my looks (over the years, you kind of get used) that I started really DOING something, instead of jumping from fad diet from fad diet without taking real responsibility for my health.

This book has started to change my life for the better! After being very tired and sluggish and gaining 5 or so pounds, I went to my doctor for a checkup and also came across this book. I thought I was a healthy eater, but after reading this book, I made some changes to my diet. After getting rid of foods with added sugar and refined grains, in addition to exercise, I’m beginning to feel healthier already and losing inches from my stomach. This is not a weird diet book...all real foods!

I do not normally read books, however I found this book very interesting - to the point where I would read it during my lunch break and before/after work.

I have always heard the phrase... you are what you eat.

Well, this book definitely gives you a perspective on that - and in my case, a very new and better perspective!! I used to go to the grocery store, maybe once every 3 weeks and I didn''t think much of all the processed food I was eating. Now, I am at the grocery store 1-2 times/week and I feel so much better. As I transitioned into a healthier diet, I noticed that my body craved fruits/vegetables more than potato chips and ice cream as before. Like many people, I do get off track and back to old habits sometimes - BUT, within a few days, I notice a difference in how I feel and my energy level drastically drops.

For me, the bigger the change in lifestyle - the more overwhelming it is for me to initiate that change. Consider trying this new way of eating for 1 week or even 2 weeks if you can and see if you notice a difference - I sure did and I hope you do too!!

I bought this book to help understand what I need to do---outside of exercise---to live a healthier life.

This book did not disappoint.

It contained some of the "standard" information (don''t skip breakfast EVER, do not eat carbs before bed, etc), but it went farther than that and explained how our health is affected by our environment (things we can and can''t control).
The book also explained how to read the "numbers" on our vegetable and fruit stickers in order to tell which vegetables are conventionally grown, organically grown or genetically engineered. I also discovered that by cooking broccoli in the microwave instead of on the stove, 90% of the Vitamin C will be retained.

This is just a small portion of the info in the book. At times, yes, the book seems to get "too organically-minded" for my own taste, but overall the book offers some eye-opening information about making healthier choices, and that was all I wanted to begin with.

I have been reading over several customer reviews, and I have to say I agree with most of what I have read. The information IS a little overwelming, but its also a GREAT book and written from a different stand point than the average diet books that I am used to reading.

It really made me focus on my body and my health, not just trying to lose weight. I totally recommend the book, but I can see that it may be the type of book that people may want to pick up and flip through at the book store to decide if it suits them or not. I do feel that most people will find the book at least interesting, because there is SO MUCH wonderful information contained within the covers. I would not be surprised to find that the book has been a lifesavor to others, because I truly beleive that balancing our hormones would make a world of difference to those of us suffering from hormonal imbalances.

NO fads, no gimmicks, no "legal speed" in Hydroxy-whatever or pills that make you soil yourself if you eat fat!)

I find reading her books almost as if we are just having a conversation--and I am listening FOR ONCE and letting it sink in, and applying it in every aspect of my life. I also have "Hot Bod in a Box" which is basically "Winning by Losing" on index cards--Nice concept but too time consuming/complicated to re-arrange every workout.

Seriously, "Master Your Metabolism"---read it and do it for yourself. Ignore the cheesy tag line the publishers gave it about "3 Diet Secrets for a hot and Healthy Body." Don''t let it dissuade you! It is about sooo much more--and a great reference for men, as well as women. It is so hard to get men to acknowledge the word hormone as applicable to both genders!! :o$

I hope this will reach SOMEONE who needs just that one bit of encouragement. I hope I can help just one person :o) I hope to be the one to push you over the edge into finding a healthy new you deep inside. You will love yourself even more when you get to the root of why you have undermined your health in one form or another. ADVENTURES ARE OUT THERE, what are you waiting for???? :o)
